Danish Internet Community Confirms dotDK support

Independent survey confirms that dotDK support meets the .DK tender requirements

Copenhagen, October, 20 2008 - The dotDK Society today released research which shows that members of the Danish Internet community confirm the importance of the organizations supporting dotDK.

“Following its win of the technical—and most important-- portion of the tender – in June, dotDK provided IT-og Telestyrelsen in August with letters of support from 19 diverse organizations, far exceeding the final requirement of 4 letters stipulated in the Tender. Today, dotDK released independent research that documents the importance of these organizations to the community” says co-founder of dotDK, Kim Viborg Andersen. “The best technical solution is now proven to have the community support defined in the Tender, and dotDK should now be awarded the license.”

In October 2008, independent research was conducted by Zapera.com A/S, a respected Danish research firm, among a representative sample of 1012 Danish Internet users. Internet users meet the Domain Act’s definition of community: “The term the Danish Internet community should be construed broadly and includes, in principle, anyone who has registered an internet domain name or using the Internet or otherwise has an interest in the Internet's development.” Hence, the opinion of this group regarding the importance of community member organizations should be carefully regarded in the official assessment.

This study concluded that the vast majority of organizations supporting dotDK are viewed as important by Danish Internet users. In particular:

  • 92% of Danish Internet users think at least one of dotDK’s supporters is an important organization.
  • 78% of Danish Internet users think four or more of dotDK’s supporters are important organizations.
  • Many of dotDK’s supporters are considered important by well over half of Danish Internet users.
  • Over 60% of the organizations supporting dotDK earned an importance score higher than that required for DIFO membership.
  • “The Danish Internet community is now much larger and more diverse than it was even a few years ago. With Internet usage nearly universal here, organizations and individuals alike depend on the Internet everyday. Understanding this rapid growth defies conventional wisdom and makes it essential to conduct research to LISTEN directly to what the community thinks. This study provides critical insights from the community which must be heeded if the vision of self-regulation in the Domain Act is to be fulfilled. dotDK has pledged to listen to and join with all members of the community if IT-og Telestyrelsen confirms it as the administrator for the .dk domain” added Andersen.

“This research further debunks DIFO’s attempts to spread misinformation about dotDK following dotDK’s appointment as .dk administrator by IT-og Telestyrelsen in June,” added Andersen. “DIFO has publicly dismissed as ‘unimportant’ virtually all of the organizations that have supported dotDK. This research clearly shows that the Danish Internet community has a different opinion—one that considers our supporters very important”

“Indeed, the majority of dotDK supporters would even meet DIFO’s apparent criterion for membership” Andersen explains. “Specifically, DIFO’s statutes require DIFO to admit only organizations that are “important.” This study shows that DIFO member FDA is considered important by 39% of Danish Internet users. 12 of dotDK’s 19 supporters are considered important by at least 39% of Danish Internet users, and would therefore qualify for DIFO membership, if DIFO considered community opinion in its decisions. DIFO’s published statements, however, appear to disregard the community entirely.”
